 | Castel Giocondo Riserva Picture of: Type: Size: Country: Region:
Design/Artwork: Winery Notes/History: It exudes expansive, multi-layered aromas, ripe-fruit fragrances of dark cherry and dried plum melding into more pronounced, mineral essences of pencil lead and stone, while suggestions of tobacco leaf seem to bring a sense of balance and completeness. Pulpy fruit comes to the fore in the attack, with tannins that are expressive but not invasive; they ably balance a nice vein of crisp acidity that makes the flavors sing. The long-lingering finale flaunts a rich mosaic of subtle flavors. |

Design/Artwork: Winery Notes/History: After a manual harvest and sorting at the vineyard, the grapes are again sorted at the winery. Following light crushing and total de-stemming the result is placed in vat.
A phase of cold pre-maceration precedes the alcoholic fermentation, where the temperature is strictly controlled. During this period the rising cap of grape skins is pushed back down into the vat and the juice from below is sprayed back over the top. At the end of the alcoholic fermentation, pneumatic pressing takes place at low temperature, following which the initial free running juice and the juice from the press are assembled back together and then placed in oak barrels (30-50% new barrels) where the ageing process can begin (15-18 months). |

 | Chateau Gloria Picture of: Type: Size: Country: Region:
Design/Artwork: Winery Notes/History: Chateau Gloria is somewhat of an anomaly in Bordeaux. It has no official place in the 1855 classification, because it did not exist at that time. It came into being as the result of one man's desire to own and run a classed growth property. That man was onetime mayor of St Julien, Henri Martin. Born at Chateau Gruaud-Larose in 1903, it seems as though Henri Martin was born into wine. His family had lived around Bordeaux for more than three centuries, usually earning their keep in the vineyards and cellars of the region. His grandfather was the maître de chai at the estate, and his father, Alfred, a cooper who subsequently took on the same role at Chateau St-Pierre, which in the early 20th Century was run by one of the Bontemps-Dubarry daughters and her husband, Georges Kappelhoff. But when Kappelhoff died the Martin family had no means of purchasing anything of significance. The majority of the estate was sold to the Van den Bussche family, who held tenure at St Pierre until 1982; Alfred had to make do with only a small plot of vines and the barrel room from which he ran his cooperage, all that he could afford to buy. He remained a cooper until 1936 when, following a strike held by his staff, Alfred sold his business and became a grocer instead. It seemed as though the Martin family were to be divorced from wine forever |

Design/Artwork: Winery Notes/History: Dark purple black in color, showing intense aromas of blackberry, licorice and Indian spices. Full-bodied, with layers of velvety tannins and a long, long finish. This offers loads of coffee, milk chocolate, toasty oak and ripe fruit, with wonderful concentration and polish. |

 | Greppicaia Picture of: Type: Size: Country: Region:
Design/Artwork: Winery Notes/History: In appearance it is deep dark purple, with a clean consistency in the glass. Notes of mineral overpower on the nose right from very beginning, with some aeration a myriad of flavor composites, such as berry fruits, cocoa, sweet tobacco, coffee, roasted nuts, bay leaf and hints of fresh mints leaves attach the senses. There is great personality in the flavors, with great linear and equilibrium between its parts. The tannins are present, but by no means aggressive, perfectly flavorful. The finish is notably prolonged, with a reminder of soft skinned fruits. Superior in every sense from Greppicante, it has the capacity to express all at the same time, strength and refinement. |
