Winery Notes/HistoryPieve Santa Restituta is yet another demonstration of Piedmont legend Angelo Gaja's new focus on Tuscan winemaking. The estate's wines have the telltale fine tannins and glossy texture of all of Gaja's wines, in addition to the firm grip of Brunello. Unsurprisingly, they've surged to the upper echelons of the region since the latter half on the 1990s, after Gaja entered into a partnership with Roberto Bellini, the previous owner, in 1994. Since 2004, Gaja has been in full control here.

Winery Notes/HistoryDeep red. Exotic coconutty oak on the rather port-like nose. At once sweeter and more primary than the Amadis, with a penetrating minerality. Also quite oaky, but has more jammy plum and blackberry fruit to stand up to the wood. Still, it's hard to predict whether this slightly pruney wine will reward more time in bottle. Finishes with sweet tannins and good length.
